Adding Fish to Your Fish Tank

So you get your fish tank all set up and you’ve tested the water to be sure that it can provide a comfortable environment for fish. now you can run out and fill the tank out with the most colorful fish In the store, right? Not so, if you want to have a successful tank with healthy fish you’ll need to follow a few guidelines.

When choosing fish are you tank you need to consider a few things. Not all fish get along so you have to be sure to choose a complementary fish so that the more aggressive fish don’t pick on the more laid-back ones. Also, you don’t want to much of a size discrepancy between your fish or the little ones can end up getting picked on. In a community tank, you have basically two choices you can either go with all species of aggressive fish or all species of non-aggressive fish.

Another thing to consider is the water quality and temperature. You want to make sure that all the fish in your tank are happy with that environment so you’ll need to purchase fish that like to be in the same temperature range. In addition it will make it easier on you if you pick fish that like eat the same food.

Some territorial fish like damselfish or toadfish like to be the only one of their kind in the tank so it may not be good to have other fish of the same species color or shape. On the other end of the scale, guppies and swordtails are quite peaceful and the least likely to pick on other fish. Aggressive fish like the goldfish may constantly go after the slower fish causing stress in the tank.

Even the mildly aggressive fish are not a good match for slow or shy fish as the more aggressive one will tend to bully the less aggressive ones. Some fishlike anglers or Green chromis are very vulnerable and should only be without a peaceful fish. Be aware when you buy fish that a young fish may start off as peaceful and become aggressive as it grows talk to your pet store owner to be sure you’re getting the right kind of fish.

Some fish, like the blennyfish, are very resistant to disease and can tolerate a large range of water conditions. Other fish such as the angel fish are more delicate and sensitive to the conditions In the tank. Obviously the more hardy fish are easier to keep so you might want to start off with them.

Another thing to think about when getting a fish are at the eating habits. Some fish are carniverous such as the angler anthias and they will eat other fish that are smaller than them. Obviously it won’t do to put them in a tank with teeny tiny fish. Some fish such as the angel fish and tang fish are herbivores and will need to be fed vegetables or vegetarian fish foods.
