Freshwater aquarium filtration is important for the health of the fish. There are basically three different types of filtration which include biological, mechanical and chemical. Almost all types of tanks will require at the minimum biological and mechanical filters to keep the water clean. You should understand each type in order to make the proper decisions for your tank.

Using a mechanical filter will involve removing waste products by continually passing the water through some sort of filter. The filter which can be a piece of foam or another type of porous material will trap the particles. The filter itself will need to be cleaned occasionally or replaced to maintain the clean water flow. There is always the production of solid waste in the tank, so a filter that provides this type of cleaning is a must.

Chemical filters use a certain type of chemical which will remove some of the material that has dissolved in the water. Things such as ammonia, toxic metals and odors can be removed through this type of filter. Basically this filter involves passing the water through carbon or something similar to absorb the pollutants. Again, because the materials used as a filter will eventually also fill up with waste, you will need to replace these as well.

A biological filter is a naturally produced type of organic compound that will convert toxic wastes found in the tank into less harmful products. This helps the fish remain healthy. It acts as a natural filter and will replenish itself. There are various styles of filters for a freshwater aquarium filtration system as well. First you will need to determine how much filtering you will require. A tank that holds between twenty and thirty gallons will likely require a power filter. Styles can include box or canister filters, fluidized bed filters, power filters, sponge filters, underground filters, as well as wet and dry filters.

If you are just getting started it is a good idea to check with others who have some experience with this type of tank. You can avoid many problems by just asking a few questions. Additionally it is always better to have more than needed filtering of the water than to have not enough. Small tanks might only require a box filter in the corner that can be used for mechanical as well as chemical filtering. It will just depend on what you place inside the box.

One factor that also needs to be considered is the flow rate. It is important that the water in your tank is properly cleaned by the filter system that you install. Additionally, all of the water in your tank should run through the filter at least once every four to five hours. Again, it is important to have the flow rate be high enough so if there is any question as to it having a high enough flow rate, you should always choose the higher limit one.

In order to ensure you are getting at least two types of freshwater aquarium filtration, consider adding sponges into the box or power filters. Adding a standard sponge will provide areas for the bacteria to create its colony as well as be protected from the elements that cause them to die off. Remember that keeping the water free from harmful toxins is very important to the success of your tank and this adds a bit of extra protection with very little effort. While it is common knowledge that buying things in bulk can save one money, it is important to realize that many of the chemical filter systems can be actually used up prior to being placed in the tank when you purchase large quantities. For example, activated charcoal which is used in many filters will begin to absorb odors from the air as well as it is exposed. It is possible to buy it in bulk and keep it in useful condition, but it must be stored in an air tight container in order to do so.

Freshwater aquarium filtration systems are necessary for the health of your tank and of your fish. When the fish become sick, they too can further contaminate the water and make other fish sick as well. This is why when you have a sick fish it is recommended that you treat with a strong chemical in order to maintain the health of the others in the tank. Additionally the filter system will need to be completely cleaned after the sickness has been removed from the tank in order to ensure it does not start again due to the filter system containing remnants.

Fish aquariums are beautiful additions to any area of your home. Aquariums add not only beauty to your decor they are also great for relieving stress. The comforting sound of a tank pump coupled with watching fish is relaxing. Making the right choices for freshwater aquarium plants can make a big difference in the appearance and health your tank.

Before you make final choices about the kinds of plants you want in your tank, make sure the fish you have or are going to get will be compatible with them. Some fish like Oscars enjoy uprooting live growth while some others like Silver Dollars find many plant varieties tasty and eat them. Goldfish love rooting in live plants as well.

Vallisneria spiralis is a great species for people starting their first aquariums. This type of plant is sturdy and well suited for tank growth, making a good choice for the back areas of tanks. It is can grow to twenty four inches tall, making it the perfect choice for backdrop growth. Keep in mind this species requires a well-lit tank for healthy growth. Temperatures need to remain between 60 and 85 degrees as well for optimal growth to occur.

A common plant that is also great for beginners is Microsorium pteropus, better known as the Java fern. This species can be grown in low light and does well when placed in driftwood or roots are loosely tied to rocks. For a spectacular look for your tank, the Java fern is good choice due to its bright green color and wide leaves. This species reaches about 8 inches tall and requires medium temperatures between 68 to 85 degrees.

Sword species are also great for beginners. Choose from the Argentine Sword plant or the Amazon species of Sword plant. Both of these species fare better is soft water. Maintaining optimal growth will require planting in a recommended substrate while the addition of iron fertilizer is recommended as well. Growth generally reaches about 18 inches tall. These plants need a well-lit tank and temperatures between 72-82 degrees.

The Hygrophila polysperma, commonly known as the Dwarf Hygrophila, is a hardy aquatic species that is easy to grow. This species requires trimming on a regular basis because its growth allows it spread out. This choice makes a great addition to an aquarium due to its wide leaves and simple care, requiring little light and temperatures between 68-85 degrees.

The aquarium with intense lighting is perfect the Umbrella plant. This species grows well in temperatures ranging between 72-78 degrees and is another good choice for its beauty. Remember to always do your homework, making sure each plant species will be compatible with one another and the fish you have in your aquarium.

Choose plant species that will grow well together means selecting ones that need the same type of environment. Temperatures and lighting are important environmental aspects and affect the healthy growth of aquatic plant life. Choose the species that fare well in the same temperatures and light settings for the best results.

The lighting you provide in your aquarium is essential for plant photosynthesis to take place. Most retailers of aquatic plant species will have a measurement requirement of so many watts per so many gallons of water. This particular measurement should be followed closely for your plant life to have the best results in growth.

Choosing the best way to plant your aquatic species is an important choice. You can plant them in clay pots that act as a substrate material. The great thing about this type of clay potting is it carries vital nutrients in it for roots. Iron is essential for proper growth. If you choose to plant in gravels substrate, you will need to make sure to add iron fertilizer.

Caring for aquatic plant life can be simple. Keep dead leaves trimmed away and always replant potted species when you see roots growing upwards out of substrate. Plant life in an aquarium setting can help to make the environment healthier for your fish while also helping to keep nitrate levels that can harm some fish species.

Live freshwater aquarium plants provide hiding places for shy fish and they also help give fish a more suitable habitat. Many fish live longer and healthier lives when their tank environment is closer to the wild habitat they come from. Live plants give food to fish that like some vegetation while other fish simply enjoy the feel of plants being around them. The attractiveness goes without saying when you compare the aquariums with live plants to the ones without them.

The substrate of a tank, whether it is gravel, sand, pebbles, or plastic chips is an important part of the tank’s delicate ecosystem. It is typically the desire of enthusiasts to create an aesthetically pleasing environment which displays the fish to their best ability. Freshwater aquarium sand provides a wider selection of possibilities for the look of the aquarium. It adds to the ease of overall maintenance and makes it much simpler to grow live plants.

What many people do not consider is that the type of substrate used has a direct impact on the health of the fish and the balance within the tank. Bottom feeding fish use the substrate for eating and other purposes. The surface material on the bottom of the aquarium also acts as a guide for fish, providing them with an orientation of their environment. Studies have shown that fish placed into a tank with a reflective or shiny bottom surface become stressed and disoriented.

A great benefit of sand in a freshwater tank is that it can be easier to clean the water. The waste material does not fall beneath the surface as it does with gravel and other forms of substrate, making it a simple matter to siphon off. This material is also a great way to maintain plants. By placing a nutritional dirt beneath a layer of sand, live plants are given what they need to thrive and the ability to develop a root system without the complication of contaminating the tank water.

The choice of material is an important consideration when planning the tank environment. The pH, calcium, and other minerals can be changed with the introduction of the incorrect type of material. For instance, aragonite is high in calcium making the water harder and altering the pH level. This is not necessarily a bad situation if you have the appropriate type of fish, such as cichlids.

This surface material can also cause a rapid growth of algae. It is important to understand and prepare for the possibility of an overgrowth by adding an acceptable algae eater to the tank community. There are a number of snails, fish, and shrimp which can add to the viewing pleasure of the aquarium without harming the ecosystem.

Since it is much finer than gravel or pebbles, the filter capability will have to be considered. A filter capable of handing 2 to 3 times the size of your tank is advisable. With the added filtration, the particulates will be kept to a minimum and provide good quality water to the inhabitants.

While it is tempting to scoop from a beach or river, this is inadvisable. These types of substrates can harbor parasites and other substances that will be detrimental to the residents of the aquarium. Instead, commercial, processed playground or other sand that has been sanitized and sterilized is a better choice.

A beautiful tank can be created which is easily maintained and balanced with a number of different substrates. Freshwater aquarium sand is an excellent selection to diversify the tank environment. Plants and water life both benefit with a good substrate.

It is very important that your fish tank contain the same environment and elements that you can see in a real pond or river. By providing an air pump for a freshwater aquarium you will give your tropical fish pets a more comfortable and healthy habitat. It effectively introduces the needed oxygen into the water and it can also help beneficial bacterias that are essential for a more balanced biological filtration inside the fish tank.

This kind of equipment has special tubes that can enhance the amount or level of oxygen in the water. It sufficiently adds bubbles and generates agitation or currents that simulate a real environment that fish would be living in in the wild. It also helps in maintaining proper pH levels inside your fish tank. An air pump typically consists of the pumping machine, diffusers, rubber tubing, regulator or clamp, and a T-piece.

If one of these pieces is damaged, you can buy them directly in specialized stores online and offline. You can choose from a variety of shapes, sizes, and designs. YOu want to be sure to get the right size for your tank, and in larger tanks you might even want two of them.

While several people do not use this device because of the loud noise, you can dampen this by putting a sponge under the unit to reduce vibration.

An air pump for your freshwater aquarium can increase the oxygen level inside the tank by its air stones and airline tubing. Remember that an increased level of oxygen inside the aquarium can benefit all living organisms including your fish and live plants. The stone or bubble disk will produce tiny bubbles that cascade upwards giving your tank a nice look and also adding oxygen to the water.

These equipments can also be used as a decoration. There are various designs in the market that you an hook the pump to that will create an opening action, like a clam sell opening or the top of a treasure chest. The bubbles will create a more natural and refreshing look to your fish tank.

When looking at buying an air pump for freshwater aquarium, it is important to know about its two types. First is the battery powered which is very useful in times when there are no electricity. While the second one is the electric-powered which is the most practical because it has several uses and advantages.

The addition of an aquarium to your home is indeed a great one. Watching fish can provide hours of entertainment and relaxation as well. The most beautiful tanks, however, are those best cared for. Choosing the right species means a lot in how healthy the entire aquarium community thrives. Follow these tips for learning the types of freshwater aquarium fish that live together peacefully.

Bettas are popular species and while they have an infamous reputation for being aggressive, beginners should know they are usually only like that towards their own kind. In most cases, two male bettas will fight until one is dead. In community tanks, with the right choices of other species, these beautiful aquatic creatures reside just fine with others. Keep in mind the lone betta should remain in a tank of about six and one half gallons. Heat and oxygen flow should be monitored regularly to provide optimal health.

Adding species that are uniquely colored and different is a great way to enhance the beauty of an aquarium. The Archerfish is a good choice for not only adding beauty, but also interesting personality. Beware, however, because these unusual silver and black fish are terrific jumpers. Take care to only place in aquariums with hoods fitted securely on top of them.

Gouramis are other kinds of colorful choices that can add a lot of flavor to your tank. However, some of them can be aggressive towards one another, especially in the case of the Kissing Gourami. This fish will pester smaller Kissing Gouramis and cause them to be stressed. Placing one Gourami in a tank is the best way to add this species to a community.

Slow moving species can add a peaceful aura to aquariums. One great choice for this effect is the African Butterfly. This is beautiful species whose fins appear to like butterfly wings when you look at it from above. They prefer slow current, spending a lot of their time floating slowly around in the water. You may want to make sure smaller species are not in the community with the African Butterfly because they may get eaten.

The tank with smaller species is a perfect environment for the Ghost Shrimp. These are tiny, unique invertebrates that can add a unique appeal to your tank. Other small species of invertebrates like the Red Cherry Shrimp add a gorgeous splash of color while the Inca Golden Snail does as well. These snails also add the benefit of being an algae cleaning service.

Platies are an excellent choice for beginners. These fish come in many colors and are hardy livebearers. You can choose from a salt and pepper color or even one that is dubbed the Mickey Mouse. These are docile creatures and do well in the community of other gentle species. Platies are some of the most popular choices sold for the freshwater tank.

Most everyone has heard about the infamous and popular Guppy. These are great for adding comical personality to your community tank as well as color and uniqueness. These are some of the reasons these fish are one of the most popular choices. Guppies are easy to care for. However, they are livebearers and have many small fry at a time. Make plans to separate the young fry or they will be eaten by not only their parents, but by other tank inhabitants as well.

Choosing to add an algae eater to your tank carries great benefits. One good choice is the Clown Pleco for not only its love of eating unwanted algae, but for its unique and unusual appearance. These peaceful, non-aggressive fish mostly stay on the bottom and take their time in making in their way around the tank. Another bottom feeder you might consider is the Striped Raphael Catfish. These are indeed beautiful and grow to be up to nine inches long, so you might consider this species for a larger tank. The Raphael Catfish makes an unusual sound while eating that is similar to croaking, making this species a certain conversational point for when you have guests over to your home.

Making your choices from the many types of freshwater aquarium fish can be challenging when they all are so colorful and unusual. Each species has been given its own special look and nature made sure to include many of them. The tank with these fish is certainly one you will be proud of and want to show off. Always remember the care you will need to provide makes all the difference in the world at how awesome your aquarium looks.

Aquariums are fantastic pieces to have in the home they can create a sense of peace and calm. There are many types of aquariums that can be maintained from cold water to tropical and each variation has its own set of wonderful fish to discover. There are a number of different types of freshwater aquarium sharks, and which one you choose will depend on the size of the tank you have.

A shark can be a beautiful addition to any home tank, but be sure to do your homework on them first. Some are very territorial and may attack other fish while others require a hiding place. Also it is never a good idea to keep more than one type of shark in the tank and this can cause aggressive behaviour in some species.

One of the best types of shark is the Bala or Silver Shark this is a very peaceful shark which looks a lot like the real deal. They are compatible with most other fish but they can grow to be very large. In some cases they can reach lengths of up to 12 inches. In order to keep this fish you will do best to have a school of around six of them, which means your tank will need to be at least 90 gallon in size.

The rainbow shark is quite striking it has a greenish black body with either bright orange or red fins. This fish has to be to a sole purchase as it will become aggressive with other sharks in its territory. On average they grow to around 5 inches and be sure that the fish you will introduce it to have enough space to hide if it has one of its temper tantrums. A tank of at least 29 gallons is recommended for this fish.

The red tailed shark is similar in most ways to the rainbow, it body is darker in colour and only the tail fin is coloured but it has the same aggressive tendencies as the rainbow.

Another option is the Albino Ruby Shark this one has a cream coloured body with red or orange fins. It is a good community fish and rarely gets aggressive, it can be kept in schools of up to three but if the tank is smaller then only one is recommended. This fish can grown to around 6 inches or more and ensure you have a cave or log for them to hide in. They are also excellent jumpers so make sure the lid fits well and be prepared when it comes to tank cleaning.

There are also sailfin sharks which have larger dorsal fins, they can fight amongst themselves so it is best to keep the as a single fish rather than a school, but in general they are peaceful towards other species. It is not recommended however to keep them with small fish as they may eat them. These fish can grow to around 2.5 inches in length.

When considering fish for any tank you need to seek expert advice, as factors such as the size of the tank and other occupants will have an impact on what you can and cannot put in. Some fish are fin nippers so having them with other fish that have large fins or tails is a bad idea as they will bully and nibble the fins of the other fish.

Similarly you need to understand the maximum size of each type of fish to ensure there is enough room in the aquarium for them to grow and live comfortably. If a fish cannot grow to its natural size and is held back by the room it has it will most likely die younger and have other issues related to stunted growth. They may only be fish but you need to be aware of their needs and do you upmost to respect and carter for them.

Fish are no different from any other pet you may have, each one has its own list of requirements and in order for them to live happy, healthy lives they need to be able to grow and move around freely. If you cannot afford a large tank then make sure you opt for a smaller shark and only have one. It is also a good idea to keep the rest of the inhabitants small too to ensure they all have enough space to move and grow.

If you are in any doubt as to which shark will suit your current set-up speak to a member of staff in any good aquarium store as they have the training and the knowledge to be able to recommend the best shark for you.

Putting together the collection of fish you want can be a challenge when you do not know who can live together peacefully. Some species are particular and do not like other like species while some are carnivorous, eating smaller species in the tank. Follow these tips for which tropical freshwater aquarium fish you can put together in one community.

Selecting your fish should be done with a few considerations in mind. One is how large the species will grow to. Think about the diet each species requires and the type of environment that is best as well. Try to select species of fish that will fare well together in the same kind of habitat. The species that grows large will mean you selecting fewer inhabitants for your tank.

Many species of catfish are available for helping to add color and spice to your tank. Most catfish species get along well one another and require about the same climate and water conditions. Some species like the Chinese Algae eater are mistaken for catfish due to their appearance and do not get along with others.

Tetras are common choices for aquariums due to their unique colors and easy going temperaments. Choose from the Black Neon Tetra that look awesome in aquariums with plants or the Bleeding Heart Tetra that is stark white with a red dot on each side. The Bloodfin Tetra is bright green with red fins and makes a colorful addition to any tank. The bright Cardinal Tetra has beautiful markings and appears its best in a school of like species.

Barbs are another common aquarium species. However, some of this species can be aggressive. Some can also grow very large, so tank size is a consideration when you are thinking of selecting these types of fish. Cherry and Gold Barbs are excellent choices for a community tank. Of course, the Goldfish is an all-time favorite that is hardy and has a colorful appearance as well. Those people interested in a large community tank should avoid selections like the Tiger Barb.

Many aquariums have additions of beautiful cichlids. However, the beginner might want to be careful when selecting from this species because of some aggression. One species in this group is the Angelfish. As long as it is not paired with another, it seems docile in the community environment, but becomes jealous of other fish when paired. The Jewel Cichlid acts in the same way when is a pair.

Some cichlids require large tanks due to their large size . The Jack Dempsey is one species that grows to be large while the Oscar is another. In fact, some Oscars get as big as a grown mans hand. Oscars need a large tank and can be aggressive towards other species. They are carnivorous as well, minnows and guppies being one of their favorite foods.

One group that is a popular choice for community tanks is Livebearers. The Endlers Livebearer is beautifully marked with brilliant colors and is thought to be extinct in the wild. Mollies are popular choices due to their docile attitude and friendliness to other species. Swordtails and guppies are also wonderfully animated and get along great with others.

Choosing Loaches for your aquarium is a good choice. The Clown Loach is an especially good selection due to its comical animations and personality, thus earning its name. Another fantastic choice is the Yo Yo Loach for its friendly disposition. The Kuhli Loach is a striped and colorful species that does great in the well maintained freshwater tank.

While most Puffer species require salt water environments and can be testy when with others, the Red Eye Puffer is completely the opposite. It requires no saltwater and does great in the freshwater set up. This species gets along well with others and is a unique addition to your aquarium.

Avoid the purchase of dyed species. These are species that have been injected with dye or tattooed to look colorful and unique. These fish have a high mortality rate and do not fare well for long. While they may look pretty, the act of forcing color on these fish is unspeakable and ends up costing them their life. Hopefully, this will be a practice that dies when more people stop buying them.

Your tropical freshwater aquarium fish are the highlight of the tank. Choose your fish carefully and only after researching about each one to ensure you get species that can live together. Learn what each species requires for being healthy and keep in mind like species due to the single environment an aquarium provides.

Many people want to do away with the practice of getting cats, dogs, birds or fish as pets. Since all these animal options have become far too common, some individuals do not find any thrill or excitement in getting something which almost everybody has. In this case, one can actually get freshwater aquarium crabs that they can care for and keep as pets.

Just like in caring for any type of pets, it is also very important to properly look after and care for them. Just like having a fish pet, they also need a clean and proper place to live in, they have to be provided with the right food, and also, pet owners will need to see to that regular cleaning and maintenance is done to ensure that their tank is always kept clean.

One very essential thing that has to be properly kept inside the tanks where you keep the pet is the type and quality of water that is being used. Oftentimes, lack of proper knowledge about the ideal water quality and temperature can lead to shorter lifespan of the pet. Temperature inside should be kept warm enough and has to be changed as often as twice every month.

This seawater creatures tend to dwell more on the adventurous side. They will take advantage of every opportunity to climb out of the tank and get out. Hence, it is very important to keep the tank properly sealed so as to make sure they will be kept inside, while at the same time making sure that there is also proper supply of oxygen inside.

Freshwater aquarium crabs also need variety when it comes to their diet in order to help keep them nourished properly. Pet owners can purchase dried food, flake food, frozen food, pellet food, and live food to be incorporated in their diet. When feeding frozen foods, it is very essential to leave them to thaw for some time.

Pets like this that are kept in a tank can actually serve as a very good decorative piece inside your home. Hence, for this particular purpose, owners can actually make the scenery inside the tank be more appealing. Aside from the usual sand and aquatic plants, one can actually put in beautifully formed and colored stones and rocks, woods, and bits and pieces of corals inside for more dramatic effects.

It is also very important that the tank will not be overcrowded. This type of pet needs space to crawl and roam around and will not appreciate it if there will be too many of them that he needs to compete with to be able to quench his natural thirst for adventure. Hence, keeping the number at a minimum will not only help keep the tank clean for sometime, while at the same time making it more conducive for your pet to live in.

Freshwater aquarium crabs are generally resistant to diseases, and they usually have a very good immune system. As long as their place of dwelling is kept clean and well-maintained, and their environment is a place where general health, cleanliness and efficiency is maintained, they will be able to enjoy a longer lifespan.

More and more people are encouraged to collect exquisite and native fish and shrimp for freshwater aquarium. Some people travel half way around the world just to have these colorful and wonderful creatures. There are a variety of types of fishes and shrimps you can find in Australia, New Guinea, Taiwan and Japan. This fascination led most aquarists to learn how to breed these organisms in a natural and healthy way.

Those who want to set up a shrimp tank, the procedures are very easy so long as you prepare it properly. Careful planning and research are the wisest move you can take. Rushing into things will not be helpful and you will just waste your time, lots of money, and effort. You can start your research on the internet. You can browse a number of websites, pet lover web pages, and other sites that is related to your project.

The most obvious important rule in making your project is that do not place fishes that eat shrimps. Naturally, if you can see that your pet shrimps can fit into your pet fish’s mouth, most likely, they will eat them. It will stress your pet shrimps and they will hide or worse die. If you can remember during your grade school, shrimps are the primary source of food for almost all fishes in the marine world. Most hobbyists would keep those breeds that camouflage abilities and have variety of specific color strains.

It is better not to put several colors into your fish tank in order for your shellfish pets to adapt and camouflage effectively to the surrounding’s color. It will be their primary defense against your pet fishes and will reduce the possibilities that they will be eaten. If you are not amenable because this kind of process requires so much attention and planning, then better make a shrimp-only tank. You will not worry that they will be eaten and you can decorate your tank to the fullest.

Next thing that you must do is determine the size of your desired tank. Remember that these tiny shellfish creatures are small, so you better choose a ten gallon tank because it is the most common tank for these kind of pets. Never place one hundred shellfish pets for a ten gallon tank.

Choosing a small tank will make it easier for you to manage the entire tank. You can immediately remove them for cleaning and maintenance or you can catch them immediately in order to determine their population.

Having a large tank is not a bad idea, it is perfect for those people who have numerous number of shrimps. Now that you have a desired tank, you can now buy main equipments and accessories such as sponge filters which are very good for baby shellfishes. Sponge filters are very affordable or if you want to have a commercial equipment, you can buy expensive canister filter. For smaller tanks, it is recommended to use sponge filters. While the large tanks must use a canister filter.

Provide proper heating and lighting to your tanks and get an excellent substrate, proper type of water that is suitable for your pets, follow required pH levels, vegetation such as stem plants, moss, anubias, rhizome plants, and so on. Taking care of shrimp for freshwater aquarium is very healthy way to relieve stress and hobby.

Nothing can match the beauty of well-maintained fish aquariums. Setting up a freshwater aquarium can be fairly easy when you follow the correct steps for doing so. If you would like to have an aquarium in your home or office, you can start by thinking of the kind of fish you would like to have.

Selecting the fish you want will determine a few things about the tank you choose. One is the size and another is the type of plants you may want to add. Many beginners choose to use fake plants to avoid trying to care live plants while mastering the care of fish and aquariums first. Some fish only grow to be a couple of inches long while others can grow to be as large as your hand. Make sure you know how big the fish will get when choosing tank size.

Getting together all the items needed for set up is important. You do not want to get started and realize you have forgotten a vital item back at the pet shop. Making a list is best to avoid this happening. In addition to an aquarium, you will need gravel, a filter and replacement filter media, heater, thermometer, water test kit, and a pasta strainer for washing gravel before putting it into the tank.

Other important items needed include a special vacuum just for aquariums, fish food for the kind of fish you want, a small fish net, and a scrubber made for the walls of active aquariums. Keep in mind caring for aquariums and fish is a great responsibility. Water changes must be performed regularly and you will need to stay on top of any changes you see taking place with your fish and with the water for preventing disease or death.

Select an area in your home or office for placement of your tank. Be sure to choose a spot that is out of direct sunlight. Do not put the tank near drafty areas or too close to heat or air conditioning units. When buying your tank, make sure to get the right aquarium heater for the size of tank you are taking home. Maintaining a certain temperature is vital to a healthy environment for fish to thrive happily in. Place your thermometer away from the heater on the other side of the tank so you will get the correct readings.

Everything you choose to put into your tank will need to be washed in mild soap. Rinsing well is an important part of preventing chemicals from contaminating the water in the tank. Making sure you rinse away all soap residues to prevent this from happening. Wash gravel by putting it into a pasta strainer and turning it over and over under running water. Fake plants can be easily washed and rinsed in the kitchen sink as well.

Pour gravel into the aquarium you have wiped clean of dust and small debris. Some people rinse the tank out and wipe it dry with a lint free, clean cloth. This can be done depending on the size tank you select due to the weight involved in some larger versions. Be sure to never use soap of any kind inside your tank. Add gravel before placing plants or other decorations.

Place a small bowl or saucer plate in the middle of the gravel before pouring water into it. In this way, you avoid disturbing the placement of your gravel and other decorations from the force of the pouring water. Pour half way so you can arrange plants and decorations a final time before filling to the top about an inch from rim.

The cycling step of setting up your aquarium is vital for fish to thrive healthily. This process might take anywhere from two weeks to a couple of months. Cycling is a process that occurs naturally in water that allows balancing of nitrates, nitrites, ammonium, and ammonia. This is the time you will need to use your water test kit to measure for proper levels of each one. Ammonia and nitrate both are harmful to fish while ammonium and nitrates are beneficial. Follow specific testing instructions that come with your test kit for making sure tank water is completely safe for adding fish.

You might think about not using fish to start the cycling process when setting up a freshwater aquarium to prevent their death. Start your cycling by adding a few flakes of food to the tank each day. When the food begins to decompose, you will have the release of ammonia to start the process. Keep putting a little in each day until your test readings are perfect for safely adding fish.
