The Blue Gourami or 3 Spot Gourami

Blue Gourami or 3 Spot Gourami as they are sometimes called because they have a dark spot on the middle of their body, another on the base of their tail and then a dark eye that appears to be a spot, are available in several color varieties. Gourami fish come in Blue, Gold and Opaline, with a few other varieties that make up the species, Trichogaster trichopterus. These fish are meant to live in larger aquariums because they tend to outgrow small sized aquariums.

Blue Gourami can live on floating flake food primarily, with some freeze dried bloodworms, frozen brine shrimp and Black Worms fed on an occasional basis.

You can start your Gourami fish in a small aquarium when they are small, but eventually you will need to have a 50 gallon aquarium or larger to hold the growing fish. The water temperature should be kept between 70 and 82 degrees Fahrenheit, and the gravel at a ¼ inch thick or less.

The Blue Gourami enjoys the company of the other varieties of Gourami. You could keep Gold, Blue and Opaline Gourami together peacefully in the same aquarium. Oddly enough, if your tank has only one variety of Gourami with other species of fish, the Gourami will gang up on the other fish. When you keep a mix of Gourami in the tank among other fish species, the Gourami tend to focus on their own type and leave the other fish alone. It is recommended that you have a minimum of four Gourami’s in your tank, with a mix from the different varieties.

You can pair your Gouramis with a wide variety of fish species, including Barbs, Rainbows, schools of Clown Loaches, or Bala Sharks, Danios or a single Rainbow Shark or a single Red Tail Shark.
