Should You Choose A Saltwater or Freshwater Tank?

When it comes time to set up the first fish tank or even additional fish tank the biggest decision you have to make is whether to set up a freshwater tank or a saltwater tank. On the one hand, a saltwater tank offers much more vibrantly beautiful fish but they are more expensive in the setup and maintenance is a little bit more complicated than a freshwater fish tank. That’s why, many experts recommend that you start off with a freshwater fish tank and then once you’ve learned the ropes you might consider setting up a saltwater tank as well.

Tropical fish for a freshwater aquarium are relatively inexpensive and you can still get many interesting fish to populate your tank. Salt water or marine fish can be quite expensive costing you anywhere from $10 to over $100 per fish. Can you imagine how bummed out you’d be if your hundred dollar fish dies after only having it for a week?

The salt water fish tank setup can be a bit more costly to especially if you going to have live rocks and corals as they require special lighting and top-notch filtration. even if you’re just going to have the fish, you’ll still need a good filtration system including a biological filter. If you don’t have live rock, you’ll want to also consider a protein skimmer which can remove the organic waste from the saltwater tank easily before it has a chance to pollute the water.

No matter whether you have a freshwater tank or a salt water one, you will have to do maintenance in order to keep your fish healthy and your tank looking good. each requires testing of the water to make sure the different levels are correct, that the saltwater tank has the added burden of testing the salinity with a hydrometer and adding salt or more water as necessary. Also, cleaning around the tank can be more troublesome as you will find encrusted salt on everything that has had water splashed on it since the water evaporates and leaves the salt behind.

A novice aquarist should really think carefully about whether they want to jump right into the world of saltwater aquariums. Of course, for some people, there is nothing like the beauty of these marine fish. Once you get the tank up and running it isn’t that much harder to maintain than a freshwater tank. You do need to be careful, however not to overfeed your fish in a saltwater tank or try to cram too many fish in there.
