Choosing The Right Goldfish Aquarium

Goldfish are not amphibious animals, which means that they have no way of leaving the water if they do not find their habitat suitable. For this reason, in order to keep a happy and healthy goldfish, it is important to take good care of your goldfish aquarium and keep it clean and sanitary at all times.

More important than the size of your goldfish aquarium is the surface area of your aquarium. The surface area of your aquarium is the patch of water that touches the air. Goldfish get their oxygen out of the water, and the larger the surface area of any given body of water is, the more oxygen there is present in the water. A good way of calculating whether or not your goldfish aquarium has enough surface area is to have 30 square inches of surface area for every inch long that your goldfish is. Of course, this goes up if you have more than one fish, so you want to always make sure that your fish have enough room to live and enough surface area to be able to breathe properly.

Cleaning your goldfish aquarium on a regular basis is a great way to give your fish a long and healthy life. Food and waste particles tend to cloud tank water up quite easily, making it necessary to recycle the water every once in a while. This does not mean that you have to dump out your tank every few days, but letting a small amount of your tank water out at a time and replacing it with fresh clean water is a great way of lessening the work it will take to clean your tank out in the future, and it will keep your fish healthier not to mention the fact that a clean tank looks much nicer than a cloudy tank. A nasty tank can lead to health problems for your fish, so it is in everyone’s best interests to keep as clean a goldfish aquarium as possible.

When you do have to clean out your tank, it is not necessary to empty out the entire tank and scrub everything; you may notice that your tank props are a bit slimy and this may not be a bad thing. While you should take care to make sure that the props in your tank do not collect aquarium grime, it is important to know that there is such a thing as good bacteria in a goldfish aquarium. These good bacteria can help to prevent bad bacteria from forming and is harmless to your goldfish.

Many people choose to cover the bottoms of their aquariums in marbles or gravel, and this is by far the safest option. It is easy to want to over do it when it comes to aquarium decorations, but remember that your fish does need room to move around. They do of course prefer to have a few places to hide out for a while, but who doesn’t? Excess goldfish castles and the like are not necessary.
