Tips For Great Goldfish Ponds
If you want a fish that will live a long time in your pond, consider buying some Japanese Koi for your backyard goldfish pond. Japanese Koi get to be very large fish, and they are the longest living breed of goldfish that there are. So if you are looking for something long term this would definitely be the way to go. Of course, there are goldfish out there that run anywhere from 99 cents to two dollars apiece, and Japanese Koi cost a great deal more than that. Eventually, goldfish ponds are designed to be their own environment. This means that you shouldn’t have to feed them, but the pond has to slowly grow into an ecosystem of its own. For this reason, it is important that you continue to feed your fish, until you are sure that they are able to get food from elsewhere. Throwing food into the water pollutes it and it is definitely best to let the fish feed themselves in the end. Understand that in the beginning, this will not be possible, so it is your responsibility to sustain the new ecosystem that you have created. Perhaps the most important part of having a goldfish pond is maintaining an appropriate pH level at all times. If the acidic level in the water gets too high or too low, the water must be changed or an additive must be used to bring that to an acceptable level for the health of your fish and all other living organisms in your pond. If you have the willpower and the manpower to do so, it is possible to build your own goldfish pond. You will have to buy a pond liner from your local home improvement store to separate the pond water from the soil, as well as some type of pump and/or filter to keep the water running and fresh. Your local home improvement store should be able to advise you on the best way to build your own goldfish pond, and give you a few tips on how to do it best for your situation. |
